In a week where sport is probably the last thing on people’s minds, there has come a bit of bad news out of the Wellington Phoenix camp.
Marco Rojas, strongly considered a serious alternative to sliced bread, has signed a contract with Melbourne Victory, and will leave the capital to – most likely – give himself a greater chance of success, in Australia and in Asia.
To my mind, the decision can’t have been a tough one for Rojas. There’s a better chance for him in Melbourne, and the only thing keeping him in Wellington would have been loyalty. It’s unlikely that money was an issue.
Invariably, there’s sadness out of Wellington. We’re all devastated that the boy we raised has left us. It doesn’t really help that this boy was a very talented young footballer. And it really doesn’t help that the A-League doesn’t have transfer fees. The Yellow Fever are already comparing Rojas’ new contract to a romantic break-up. But as break-ups go, this one isn’t too messy. He was honest and open to Wellington, and he will forever be thankful for the chance Phoenix gave him. Well, he had better be thankful.
But, like all break-ups, Phoenix fans are left with no small degree of confusion. It’s going to be awkward, it’s going to be hard, and we’re (seriously) going to need a rebound boy. But who?
Who can take on a defender the way Rojas did? Who can cross a ball like Rojas? The truth is, probably no one. Unless Ricki Herbert can pull off a brilliant offshore signing, the Phoenix is going to have to play with a much weaker, less incisive attack. There’s probably only room in the Kiwi game at the moment for one ‘Marco Rojas player’.
So what are we supposed to think of him now?
When Shane Smeltz left the capital, he returned to excessive (perhaps uncalled for) booing. I imagine Rojas will receive the same treatment. Most Phoenix fans will be hoping for some sort of sophomore slump, a type of second season syndrome. But I for one will be silently pleased to see him succeed.
It might sting a little, if he scores against the Phoenix, or if his Melbourne can do a little better than us. But every cloud has a silver lining. We’ve now seen young Kiwis make it to bigger contracts through the Phoenix. Kosta Barbarouses is flourishing in Brisbane, and now Rojas. Wellington has the moral high ground to smile and say ‘we made you’. We’ve been shown that people from Hamilton really can succeed. And it opens up a door for a new player at the Phoenix (as well as increasing the urgency to re-sign existing players). And it makes a win against Melbourne so much sweeter. For Rojas, this really might be the break to get him a big overseas contract. Then at last, Wellington fans can cheer him again.
And there’s always the All Whites. Hopefully.

You really believe your own 'spin', "He was honest and open to Wellington," Like hell he was.

Upon revealing "one deal is ahead of the other", the Star-Times pressed Rodi Rojas on Melbourne. He beamed: "I can't comment on that. I would like to but we've got to respect the Phoenix, they should be the first to know."
[Reading between the lines it sounds clear you guys are keen on Melbourne?]
[Laughs] "Could be, could be. But I hope you don't put anything down."
Financially, Rodi Rojas said all offers are similar. But the Star-Times understands Phoenix owner Terry Serepisos has done everything possible to cling on to Rojas – tabling by far the most lucrative deal which would have seen him one of the club's top earners.
Apparently money is not the reason Rojas wants out.
"At the end of the day, it depends on the coach and what they want to use him for," his father said.
"Everyone thinks Marco's a winger. He wants something a bit different. He's an attacking central midfielder. We want to see if he can play there.
"He can still progress at the Phoenix, of course. We're looking at where he can progress the most, if you know what I mean."
Admitting meetings with Victory staff, Rodi was inspecting Melbourne's training facilities during the same week Marco inspired the Phoenix to a 1-0 win at Hindmarsh Stadium.
"I was a bit cheeky, I have done that.
"I did shoot over about three weeks ago just to have a bit of a talk to them," he said.
Rojas father was having a go (via the media), at Ricki Herbert. Little cry baby and Big cry baby Daddy "Everyone thinks Marco's a winger. He wants something a bit different. He's an attacking central midfielder. We want to see if he can play there".
All good things come to those who develop and wait! and the BRAT was injured as well...Little Judas Iscampered is in the All Whites - After Espousing, I can play for CHILE...Why did'nt he buggar off there . At no stage did I ever read that he and his behind-the-back father ever come out Publicly in support of the 'Trapped Chilean Miners' Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United did and even had some of the miners' visit them.
I cannot stand seeing that little jumped up, ungrateful BRAT in the All Whites jersey. It holds supposedly, MANA (Prestiege and Love of your country and above all, LOYALTY).
In fact I shall go so far as to say, I don't like the ALL WHITES JERSEY AT ALL -Since the likes of CyberCockCain for his disgraceful, disgusting cyber image GENITALS and NZFootball's chairman CockUp van Hattum have brought the 'Beautiful game into Disrepute...van Hattum with his legal threat against Taranaki Soccer (Children have a right to play Soccer) and he has no right to threaten them so says the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and I think he is also a BIGOT. If one looks at NZFootball's documents many of the images used are of Pakeha children (His annual chairman's Report) and Pakeha Youths, but then thats not surprising as he comes from..."REDNECKED WHANGANUI" Must be great mates with that Looney Tunes Racist...Michael Laws.
